Praia da Falesia, Albufeira: best for watersport fans
Stretching for roughly 8km, Falesia beach can offer something for pretty much anyone and any occasion, from secluded spots for sunbathing to action-packed fun days. Free car parks are dotted along the coastline, and depending which end you pick the beach is either accessed by staircases or by walking over sand dunes. Heading to the Albufeira end will provide plentiful opportunities for those adrenaline junkies who need a bit of excitement from their beach visit. At several points along the sands you can do stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking, and for any newbie surfers, this is one area that is popular due to the gentle swells and less intense waves to ride! Dolphin watching boat tours and jet-ski hire are also available.

Praia de Marinha, Lagoa: best for the social media sharer
This is one of the most, if not the most, famous picture-postcard views in Portugal. Ranked in the top 10 most beautiful beaches of Europe and in the top 100 best beaches in the world, Praia de Marinha is the place to go for the scenery, the pics for the socials, but also just to take in the absolutely jaw dropping perfection of the vista. The water quality is unreal, crystal clear and shimmering, making it an ideal spot for some snorkelling. You will find many species here in the endless rock pools under the surface, and the hidden coves. A visit to the Cathedral rock formation is a must. Take your own gear and definitely pack swim shoes if you want to explore further down the beach past the fallen rocks.

Praia da Rocha, Portimao: best for luxury and comfort
If you like your beach with some VIP extras, then head to Portimao and check out No Solo Agua. This huge bar and restaurant gives the most fantastic Balinese and tropical vibes, with large and luxurious beds on the sand and hypnotic tunes playing in the background. The white sand and turquoise waters never fail to thrill. Spend the day here (beds come with a charge or a minimum spend) and treat yourself to fresh fruit juices, smoothies, sushi and cocktails and you will leave feeling energised and refreshed.

Praia da Fuseta-Mar, Ilha da Fuseta: best for privacy and rustic vibes
Once you have given the lagoon bit of Fuseta beach a try, you will want to venture further, to the island area. Take your own set up and make a full day of this special spot, beginning with a beautiful ferry ride from Fuseta marina. There is ample parking here, and the return trip will cost you around €5 per adult. The ferry is reliable and the journey gentle, so no worries about sea sickness! In quieter times, take a cool box with drinks and snacks as the bars and cafes are seasonal.

Praia de Armacao de Pera – best for a blend of old and new

If you fancy being able to soak up some sun, watch fisherman do their daily chores and then partake in some delicious fresh fish and a cocktail, then this is the spot. With 2km of perfect beach, there is no shortage of space. You can hire sun beds and parasols in the busier areas, or head off to find your own quiet patch. Head east to the Praia de Pescadores, to see the traditional and colourful fishing boats, or go west to Vale do Olival for dramatic vistas of the rock formations. The promenade on the beach offers an incredible variety of eateries, with seafood obviously being the highlight!
