THE COST OF TANNING
A sun-kissed complexion may look healthy on the surface, but prolonged UV exposure can leave the skin dehydrated, stressed and more vulnerable to premature ageing. Autumn is the perfect time to give your skin the attention it deserves, says Manuela d’Oliveira of Magic Beauty in Almancil
Rather than focusing solely on correcting visible changes, this is the ideal season to restore hydration, support the skin’s natural repair processes and prepare it for the cooler months ahead.
One of the most common concerns I see after summer is dehydration. It is important to understand that dehydrated skin is not the same as dry skin. Dehydration simply means that the skin lacks water. Even oily skin can become dehydrated after months of sun exposure, resulting in tightness, dullness and a loss of that all-important elasticity.
Professional hydration treatments can make a remarkable difference. One of my favourites is the Oxygen Aqua Facial, a treatment designed to deeply cleanse the skin while infusing it with intensive hydration and oxygen. The result is a complexion that feels refreshed, smoother and visibly more radiant. It is suitable for almost every skin type and is particularly beneficial after the summer months when the skin needs a gentle recovery programme rather than aggressive treatments.
Another excellent option is DEP, which stands for Derma Electroporation. Unlike traditional needling, DEP is a completely needle-free technology that uses controlled electrical impulses to temporarily increase the permeability of the skin, allowing active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, peptides and vitamins to penetrate much deeper than with topical application alone. This advanced treatment helps improve hydration, supports collagen production and leaves the skin looking healthier, firmer and more luminous without downtime.
Pigmentation is another concern that often becomes more noticeable after summer. Sun exposure can stimulate excess melanin production, making existing sun spots or uneven skin tone appear darker. Fortunately, autumn is one of the safest and most effective seasons to begin treating pigmentation.
Bio-microneedling is also an effective way to support skin renewal. This treatment uses microscopic spicules derived from marine sponges, which are gently massaged into the skin to stimulate the natural cell turnover process. While the skin’s normal renewal cycle takes around 28 to 30 days, this process can be accelerated to around seven days. As older surface cells are shed, the complexion may gradually appear brighter, smoother and more even, while signs of pigmentation, uneven texture and sun damage can be significantly reduced.
It is equally important to remember that healthy skin starts with consistency rather than quick fixes. Daily sun protection should remain part of your skincare routine throughout autumn and winter, especially if you are treating pigmentation. UV rays remain active even on cloudy days, and protecting your skin helps preserve the results of professional treatments while preventing the possibility of future damage.
Hydration also starts from within. Drinking enough water, maintaining a balanced diet rich in antioxidants and using quality skincare products at home all contribute to healthier skin. There is no question about it: professional treatments work best when they are combined with good daily habits.
Every person’s skin is unique, and there is no universal treatment that suits everyone. A professional skin consultation can help identify your skin’s current needs and create a personalised plan based on your concerns and long-term goals. Sometimes just a few carefully selected treatments are enough to restore the skin’s natural vitality.
